De fysische principes van ultrageluid worden hieronder kort beschreven.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wanneer ultrageluid met een frequentie van 20 kHz en een geluidsintensiteit van 0,1 W\/cm\u00b2 wordt toegepast op vloeibare media, ontstaan er kleine cavitatiebelletjes door de sterke wisselspanning. Deze kleine holtes met lage interne druk ontstaan door de inertie van het medium en de ge\u00efnduceerde mechanische trillingen. Door de externe druk van het medium imploderen de onstabiele bellen na een korte groeiperiode onder hoge druk- en temperatuurpieken. Dit resulteert in hoge schuifkrachten op de grenslaag. Dit effect treedt vooral op bij luchtbellen of vuildeeltjes, de zogenaamde cavitatiekernen.
