Sonotrodes
Maximum amplitudes with high-quality sonotrodes
The horn functions in an ultrasonic homogeniser as a mechanical "velocity transformer" with which the amplitude of the active transducer can be substantially increased or decreased at constant total power. With a significant reduction in cross-section from the input to the tip surface of the horn, the ultrasonic amplitude is amplified many times over and can reach peak values of over 300 µm. In principle, continuous outer contours running according to a mathematical function must be taken into account when changing the cross-section, because they have a great influence on reactive power losses and thus on the efficiency of the sonotrode. The transformation is ultimately technologically limited by dynamic material limit values and the shape-dependent distribution of the vibration-strain stress in the material.
